Each month the James Dyson Foundation donates Dyson machines for fundraising and makes small financial donations to charitable causes in engineering education or medical or scientific research.

Because it gets more requests than it can fill, it prioritizes organizations near Dyson's US headquarters in Chicago and other Dyson US offices.

It does not support causes outside that remit, including animal welfare, loans or funding for individuals or companies, and sports teams.

If your request fits, the foundation says it will get back to you within two weeks.

Tips from the program page: Say clearly how your event connects to engineering education or medical or scientific research; the form asks which of those objectives you support.

How to apply

Dyson asks every request to include the following.

  • Apply at least two months before the fundraiser or program date.
  • Use the online form: your name, organization, delivery address, email and phone; which foundation objective you support; whether you want a machine or a financial donation; the date of the fundraising event; and your mission and how you will use the donation (up to 500 characters).
  • You can upload a supporting file as a PDF, Word document, PNG or JPG.

What Dyson will not fund

Dyson states in its own published guidelines that it will not fund the following.

  • Causes outside engineering education or medical and scientific research
  • Animal welfare
  • Loans or funding for individuals or companies
  • Sports teams

This covers only what Dyson states. A request can still be turned down for reasons a company does not publish.

When to ask

Dyson states a lead time of 2 months. Count back that far from your event date and send the request no later than then.

Across more than 25,000 fundraising events in our own records over fifteen years, March, April and May are the busiest months for fundraisers, October is the next busiest, and July and December are the quietest.

Work backwards from your event rather than forwards from today, and if your event falls in the spring peak, ask earlier than the stated lead time rather than later.
